Where Brazil’s mining tenements are

Minas Gerais, Bahia and Pará account for 39.7% of the country’s mining tenements.

  • Minas Gerais50,600
  • Bahia29,866
  • Pará23,574
  • Goiás16,242
  • São Paulo15,375
  • Mato Grosso12,884
  • Rio Grande do Sul12,484
  • Santa Catarina11,473
  • Paraná9,458
  • Ceará8,902

Mining tenements are not spread evenly. Minas Gerais alone has 50,600, or 19.3% of the total. Bahia, in second place, has 29,866.

Next come Pará (23,574), Goiás (16,242) and São Paulo (15,375). The top ten states hold 72.8% of all tenements.

Volume is not value: a state with many sand and clay applications can weigh less than another with a few iron or copper concessions. That is why the number of tenements is where the reading starts, not where it ends.

The tenements behind these numbers are on the map.
